The responsibility for the control of noxious weeds is established by Chapter 317 of the Code of Iowa. The code further defines what a noxious weed is and the role of the County Weed Commissioner.

Marion County Noxious Weed Control

The control of noxious weeds in Marion County requires a cooperative effort of all property owners in the county. The Board of Supervisors and the County Weed Commissioner encourage all property owners to become familiar with the various species of noxious weeds in the state and take the necessary control measures, during the prime growing season, to control these weeds.

Code of Iowa
The responsibility for the control of noxious weeds is established by Chapter 317 of the Code of Iowa. The code further defines what a noxious weed is and the role of the County Weed Commissioner.

The code requires each property owner to control the noxious weeds that may be on their property (317.10).

The following is the notice published in the newspaper in 2007. A similar notice will be published each year.

COUNTY WEED PROGRAM

The Marion County Weed Program for 2007 will consist of proper and timely eradication of weeds, lawfully designated as noxious, by all owners of land in Marion County. Persons wishing information, advice, or to report a violation, should contact:

Canada thistle should be cut by June 15th. All other thistle should be cut by July 1st. If eradication is by spraying, application should be one week prior to these dates.

The roadside weed control program by the Secondary Road Department for 2007 consist of spot treatment or cutting of roadsides at locations deemed necessary for control of brush and weeds. This operation will be conducted during the months of June and July for weeds and during the entire year for brush.

Property owners who desire that ground treatment with herbicides or brush cutting by machine not be conducted by the County adjacent to their property, should secure an annual permit from the County Engineer for Resident Control of Brush In The Right-Of-Way. Application for the cost-free permit can be made at the County Engineer’s Office at 402 Willetts Drive. Call (641) 828-2225 for information.
